Saddle Donkeys

Say 'Howdy' to Pete and Hank,

our large standard

Saddle Donkeys!

(Oops, that's a little too close, Pete!)

If you're new to longears, you may be wondering, "Why saddle donkeys?!"

Deer Parks Wildlife Mitigation Area, Eastern Idaho

To answer, first let us explain how we "fell into the kettle," as the French expression goes, in

Petey's Story.

Pete takes a brief rest break at Champion Lakes, Idaho Sawtooths

Now let us show you where saddle donkeys can take you . . .

Pete, South Fork (Snake River) trail, Idaho

calmly . . .

Hank ducks under a fallen tree, Palisades Creek trail, eastern Idaho

capably. . .

Hank and Pete navigate rocks, Mill Creek trail, Lemhi range, Idaho

and companionably too!

Tin Cup trail, Teton Range, Wyoming

Now we know what you're thinking, "Okay, so they're calm, capable and companionable . . . but aren't donkeys awfully SLOW?"

Having saddle donkeys can really broaden one's horizons!

Wallace Stegner wrote that to appreciate the arid American West,

"You have to get over the color green; you have to quit associating beauty with gardens and lawns; you have to get used to an inhuman scale; you have to understand geological time."

We think saddle donkeys would concur.  Ours particularly love taking in the view at high overlooks.  Sometimes it even seems they think in geological time.

A few more new horizons thanks to Pete and Hank . . .

France

At the Château du Plaix, Lignières, France

On the suggestion of artist and fellow donkey-enthusiast PAM, the Thiaulins de Lignières en Berry, an incredibly dynamic French folkloric society, invited us to be the "foreign guests of honor" in May, 2002, at the biggest mule and donkey fair in all of France!

Photos from the fair and the text of our presentation can be seen on Didier Bonnefond's "Cité des Ânes" website, HERE

(Merci, Didier !!)
